When last November’s issue of Architectural Digest landed on my desk at work, it was pretty much love at first sight. The cover story was the gorgeous Beverly Hills home of Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, and I was immediately smitten with it. To this day it sticks in my mind as one of my all-time favourite spaces.
First of all, who doesn’t love this couple? I imagine that Ellen and Portia spend most of their time laughing hysterically, and the rest of it modeling their fantastic shoe collections. Add in Ellen’s penchant for interior design (you can read all about it in the article… it’s a good one) and their life must be pretty sweet.

Why do I love their home so much? Let’s count the reasons, shall we?
- The windows and doors. Seriously, I’m freaking out over the metal-framed, barely-there windows in this home. The beautiful California light which streams through them helps too, I suppose.
- The neutral colour palette. The mix of cooler greys and warmer taupes here is so well done, and it’s a tricky balance to pull off. I’m a big fan of soothing, restful schemes like this one, which form a great backdrop for accessories and art.
- The art. Speaking of art, Ellen and Portia seem to be serious collectors. It’s so refreshing to see homes where the art seems to have been chosen for interest and love’s sake, and not simply because it “goes”.
- The mix of styles. Here we’ve got modern furniture, antiques and a whole slew of rustic and ethnic pieces, all mixed together with aplomb. The colour scheme helps to tie everything together seamlessly.
