I’ve been a big fan of the German website Freunde von Freunden (Friends of Friends) since Holly of Decor8 posted about it oh, a couple years ago. It’s a fantastic, Selby-like site which features interviews with interesting, creative (and good-looking!) people alongside wonderfully evocative photos of their homes and workplaces. Though I love a spic-n-span living room as much as the next designer, I really enjoy looking at photos of people’s stuff – their collections and even their messes – as I think it can tell you so much about them.
Freunde von Freunden started in Berlin, but their interviews page now includes subjects from all over the world. I appreciate that they don’t just stick to the “big three” of New York, Paris and London, but show us places as off the beaten track ( in design blog terms) as Beirut, Reykjavik and Istanbul.
Having said that, today I’m in the mood for Paris. One of my best friends is there now, having flown over yesterday from NYC with her boyfriend. I’m so jealous I was considering Eurostar-ing it over to see them, but decided against being the awkward third wheel on a romantic getaway. (Can you imagine? “Oh hi guys!”)

I love how different, yet how completely Parisian, each of these three apartments is. Traditional, modern or eclectic and vibrant, each has that unmistakable je ne sais quoi. To me, it’s a sense of being much more relaxed and less “designed” than their North American and British counterparts, but looking utterly stylish for it.

I’m not sure when I’ll next make it across the Channel (here’s hoping for a weekend away this Autumn), but until then I’ll let Freunde von Freunden make an armchair traveller out of me, to Paris and beyond.
