Hello, and Happy Monday! Today’s GOML comes to you courtesy of Berlin, where I spent last weekend in a cold, albeit deliriously happy, state. Don’t you just love falling in love with a new place? I’m already planning a return trip, and hope to have a proper Travelogue post for you later this week. In the meantime, here’s a bit of what my iPhone captured in the German capital…
1 My friend Claire and I were up bright and early on Friday morning for our flight from Heathrow. Once arrived in the city, we met up with another friend who flew a different airline, and a fourth who’d been working in the city for the past week.
2 No, the name of this street is not a coincidence, though wouldn’t it be hilarious if it were? Named after my ancestors who were from Berlin, Büsingstraße in the southwest of the city has become somewhat of a family pilgrimage site. I was beyond excited to finally see it for myself, and took approximately 1 million photos of the area.
3 After a full first day of sightseeing, the four of us found an adorable and stylish German restaurant in trendy Prenzlauer Berg. I wolfed down that bowl of Käsespätzle, as well as half a pretzel (freshly baked for us! whoever said the Germans weren’t friendly?!) and my share of a delicious piece of chocolate cake.
4 There was rather a lot of stopping and consulting maps on this trip. My natural leadership tendencies usually mean I’m the one in charge of this, but on this trip I was happy to let Antonia, who has a killer sense of direction, and her sister Cinzia, who knows Berlin quite well, lead the way. More time for photography that way!
5, 6 The graffiti scene in Berlin is something else. Between the inspiring East Side Gallery (a 3.1km section of the Berlin Wall left standing, and decorated by artists all over the world as an homage to peace and freedom) and pretty much every wall in Kreuzberg, I got a bit snap-happy.
9, 10 Our last day in Berlin dawned cold and snowy, though any disappointment we felt was soon assuaged by these gorgeous views. We ate brunch in a Swiss restaurant overlooking a park, where scores of German families were enjoying the weather with the help of old-fashioned wooden toboggans.
The only (mild) downer to my trip is that the weather, and the go-go-go of it all, left me feeling a little run down toward the end. But I’m hoping my health will pick up this week and I’ll be back here regularly. What have you been up to lately?
